Current Sermon Series
We love celebrities, VIPs, MVPs and the easily recognized greats among us, but often it is the army of faceless and nameless people who are truly heroic because they are the fuel for propelling a movement forward. They are the ones who set the table for celebrities, VIPs and MVPs to do what they do. Even though they may live in obscurity, it is often the unsung heroes who are truly great. And the kingdom of God is no different. The kingdom of God has been advanced by unsung heroes. For every Peter, Paul, Mother Theresa or Martin Luther King Jr. there's been a million unsung heroes who labored in obscurity to advance the kingdom and make possible what they accomplished. So we are in the midst of our summer message series, Unsung Heroes, where we are learning from the obscure and lesser-known heroes in the Bible who did great things to advance Gods kingdom and made possible what the more well-known accomplished. |

Message from Steve
As the calendar turned to July, I know that we're in the
summer months. School is out. Family vacations ramp up. Work tends to slow up a
bit. And the sun shines (okay, so maybe that wasn't true of June, but here's
hoping July has plenty of sun!).
I really like summer. I really like
the sun. I really like the new activities I have with my family. I really like
how long it stays light in the evenings. I really like cooking out and eating
outside. But mostly, I really like the change of pace. Why? Because that slower
pace (even if it is only a tad slower) allows me to come back to vision, as I
was recently reminded by John Ortberg. Not the vision of the future. Not the
vision of what we will accomplish. The vision of God in the here and now.
I really like the change of pace because I get to get back
to the vision of reality as it is now with God. In these slower moments, I get
to reflect and remind myself of how good God is, how competent God is, how
loving God is, how powerful God is, and how personal God is. And then I remind
myself of how fortunate I am to be living in these moments with God because of
what he's up to in me and in this world. The vision, you see, is the vision of
God, his life and his kingdom that is already here and now where we live in
God's power and presence through Jesus Christ.
That is the vision I return to, the vision of God in the
here and now. And that is so important for me because that vision is what
informs me of why I do all of what I do. That vision reminds me of why I read
the Bible, why I build relationships with other followers of Christ, why I
serve as I do, and why I seek to love the way I do. And so often from September
to June, that vision for me can diminish because my life can be a blur of
activity. I'm simply racing in life, in work, with my kids and their activities
and schooling. I can get so busy with activities, even really good and
spiritual activities that I lose the vision of God that informs why I'm doing
all those activities in the first place. That vision of God reaffirms why I
seek to serve, pray, study, read, and love the way I do because it reminds me
that through Jesus Christ, I live in the power and presence of God!
So how about you? Has the pace of the year gone by sucked
your vision of God in the here and now dry? Have you forgotten the why of all
the stuff you're doing because the vision bucket is low? If so, take time to
reflect and to remind yourself of the vision of God in the here and now. Remind
yourself on vacation and restful areas of how good, competent, loving,
powerful, and intimate God is. Reflect on the reality of God's power and
presence having drawn near through Christ, which gives us life and satisfies
the itch in our soul.
Come back to the vision of God to refuel and to refocus you
for the coming months and the upcoming year; otherwise, that future time may
just end up being a blur of activity, of "have-tos," of guilt quieting
activities, instead of actions stemming from a desire to live out the vision of
God in the here and now. That is what will sustain our efforts, our service,
our activities, and our practices because through Jesus, we live in the power
and presence of God! So breathe in that vision of God in the here and now.
Breathing in the vision of God with you,
Steve

Volunteer Spotlight
This
month we are pleased to spotlight Andrew (Drew) Nyssen for his areas of
service in the church. Drew is part of
the Tech Team that runs the sound on Sunday mornings and is also a Life
Community Group leader.
The Tech
Team holds a vital role on Sunday mornings.
Drew and his team, which also consists of Adam Young and Joe
Wilkinson, arrive at 8am on Sunday mornings and set up the speakers, cords,
amps, and soundboard. The team records each sermon for the website as
well as mixes the audio during morning practice so that the various sounds of
the vocalists and instruments compliment each other. Some songs require
different mixes to highlight soloists. Between songs, you'll see a
flurry of button pushing as they turn mics off and on to prepare for the next
segment of the service. The team enhances the worship experience by
creating an acoustic environment that helps focus the audiences' attention to
Christ and glorifies him through music.
Before the service, the Tech Team joins the Pastors and the Worship Team
in prayer over the service and each other, praying that God would be glorified and
hearts would be opened to God's word.
Drew's call to this role came out of his love for music, but
he jokes that the only thing he can play is the radio. After many years
of turning knobs and pushing buttons on the stereo, he felt ready to try out
the soundboard. He loves being
surrounded by worship music and is blessed every Sunday with the opportunity of
praising God during both the morning practice and during the service.
Something you might not know about the team is that they
keep a picture of Ryan Phelp's Grandmother at the soundboard to keep them
company. Drew states it can be lonely sitting in the back by yourself.
Besides his role on the Tech Team, Drew is also a Life
Community Group Leader for one of the Groveland groups. We are thankful for Drew's willingness to
honor God with his leadership skills by spending time each week preparing and
leading the study.
Drew has been married to Casey Nyssen for 5½ years.
They have three kids: Chayse, who is the oldest girl(9), Miles(3), their
only boy, and on June 15th they welcomed another
baby girl, Emery, into their family. Drew and his family have attended
Grace Point for three years.
Drew's service on the Tech Team and as a Life Community
Leader has been a blessing to GracePoint.
We are thankful for his desire to serve the Lord and that he has
answered God's calling in these different ministries.
