Astonishing Delight

Work. Work. Work.

For most of us work is just a job. A means to an end, a paycheck.

We put in our time and dream of getting out.

But what if work is more than a job? What if our work is something significant in the eyes of God?

What if there's more to work than just...a McJob?

Come and discover a better way as we go

Beyond McJob.

This is an seeker-friendly series, so start thinking and praying about people whom you could invite to experience the way of Jesus during this series!

Painting masterpieces inspire as they capture a moment of what is and what could be. I can still remember seeing a print of The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh for the first time in my junior high art room. I was captivated with the swirling skies and the yellow glow of the stars overhead a darken, sleepy village. His vision of what is and what could be in a nighttime sky burned an image of an astronomical beauty within me at a junior high school art room. I also still remember touring the Metropolitan Museum of Art and seeing the famous original of Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze. I stood in wonder at the sheer size of the painting (the painting is over twelve feet high and twenty-one feet wide) communicating the magnitude of the revolutionary moment at hand to me. His vision of what is and what could be in that turning moment of the Revolutionary War stirred awe within me for Washington's leadership, courage and audacity in the cause.

But there is another masterpiece in process that has captivated me lately. It is God's masterpiece of the church and in particular, our corner of that painting called GracePoint as that part of the painting becomes increasingly clear and compelling. Over the last year and a half, God has been among us painting broad strokes of brilliant colors of faith, love and hope. That combination of a picnic and baptism on the last Sunday of August embodied part of it as the connections of community were revitalized and people declared their association with God through their faith in Jesus Christ when they were baptized.

And there is more to this painting God is developing at GracePoint. There are broad brushstrokes of additional brilliant colors that he is making in our portrait of GracePoint. While we'll spend our first message series of the fall detailing these new brushstrokes at GracePoint, let me give you a preview of them within this portrait God is painting among us at GracePoint.

1)    Pray at every level of ministry for God's power and effectiveness,

2)    Thrive in our faith and deepen our connection with Christ,

3)    Invite people to come and experience the way of Jesus at GracePoint during invitation-friendly worship gatherings and other venues,

4)    Reach out to our world for Christ with the whole gospel by pooling our resources together for the cause,

5)    Define who we are and how we live life as a church by incorporating as a legal, independent church.

So pray for God to do what only he can do in and through us. Thrive in faith by putting yourself in a position in life to do so. Invite people all around you to invitation-friendly worship gatherings on Sunday morning. Reach out to our world with the whole gospel by bringing your resources to bear on the cause of Christ. Lend your voice to define ourselves as an independent church. And come out on September 9th as we begin our tour of Destinations that God is taking us on and the directions you and I can take to reach those destinations.

So go ahead. Pick up a paintbrush and add to the portrait God is laying before us.

Painting alongside you,

What's the Point?
A Vision for Point Classes at GracePoint

Our Goal: Bible-Saturation

Peter reminds us that, as believers, we are babies.  We have been adopted as sons and daughters by God who need the care of a parent in order that we grow.  "Crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation," Peter says (1 Pet. 2:2).  This spiritual milk comes in many forms, but as its foundation, God has given us his Word.  This is the basis for our growth and without it we are left unprotected and are unable to "proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness in his marvelous light," (1 Pet. 2:9).

GracePoint is committed to growing our people, raising them on the food that is the Word of God (Matt. 4:4).  It is our great desire for the people of GracePoint become so Bible-saturated that we cannot help but turn into mature, active and passionate disciples.  The more we get to know God, the more we are moved to give up our sin and commit ourselves to service in the church and the world.

Why Point Classes?

We offer many forms of training that are already helping us to our goal.  Our Sunday services offer preaching and teaching from Steve and others.  The Life Communities scattered throughout the area give people the opportunity to learn from the scriptures on a smaller more personal scale.  This fall we are going to take another step toward reaching our goal: Point Classes.  Point Classes, held on Sunday mornings, are designed to disseminate the great truths of the Bible through the teaching of theology, history and church ministry.  Why Point Classes?  They're another avenue designed for us to dig deeply into the Word.  Whereas Life Community teaching is more "informal," Point Classes will be slightly more "formal."  However, even though the classes will be lecture based, they will offer times of interaction and allow for as much questioning as possible.

Acts: His Witnesses

Our first Point Class will begin in just a few weeks!  Because we are a new church, and because we are going to be going through an "incorporation process" in the next few months, we decided that it would be wise to have our first class on the first church: Acts.  The Acts of the Apostles, as it's known, was the first hand account of the early church.  It was a truly remarkable beginning to the church and should serve as the example for us today.  Craig Utley will help you through this incredible book and help you understand what it really means to be "His Witnesses."

Please sign up for this class on September 16 after church in the café.  If you have any questions, contact me at rphelps@gracepointne.org or 978-681-6483.
